Abstract

A study was conducted to investigate relative abundance of adult  mosquitoes in four selected sites in University of Abuja Main Campus, Abuja FCT, Nigeria, from July to September 2011. A total of 815 adult mosquitoes comprising of 498 (61.10%) females and 317 (38.90%) males were collected and three Genera: Anopheles , Aedes and Culex were identified. Out of the three Genera, Anopheles was the most abundant, with 433 (53.20%), followed by Aedes, with 248 (30.40%) and Culex with 134 (16.40%). There was no significant difference in the distribution of mosquitoes in the study area but there was a significant difference in relative abundance of the mosquitoes, according to species (p< 0.05). Mosquito species abundance revealed that Anopheles species was higher in terms of abundance which are very important vectors of malaria in Nigeria. These results indicated that vectors of mosquito-borne diseases are breeding in the study area, most of which are encouraged by human activities. Keywords : Relative abundance, adult mosquitoes, Anopheles , Aedes and Culex .
