Abstract
Attrition of personnel during first term of enlistment has become a major area of concern in the all-volunteer U.S. Navy. Attrition from the 'A' school training environment has been perceived to be symptomatic of the overall attrition problem. This study investigated 156 Al and A3 courses to: examine factors associated with academic attrition, identify the extent and pattern of attrition in these courses, determine the aggregate and course specific costs of academic and nonacademic attrition. Extensive data are provided. Major variables studied include academic attrition, nonacademic attrition, qualified vs. unqualified personnel inputs, and cost per graduate.
