Abstract

Twenty five biparental progenies developed from the F2 of P-1460/P-1121 of scented rice (Oryza sativa L.) were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications to estimate the genetic variability parameters and correlation-coefficient for eight quantitative traits. The biparental progenies (BIP) 12, 5, 7, and 17 had higher mean performance for all the characters under study. In overall, the phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation. High heritability in broad sense was recorded for 1000 grain weight (57.90), panicle length (51.41) and plant height (47.45). High heritability accompanied with low genetic advance was found for 1000 grain weight, panicle length and single plant yield indicated the non-additive gene effects. Single plant yield (g) was positively and significantly correlated with plant height, number of panicles per m2, spikelet per panicle, panicle length and 1000 grain weight at genotypic level. Days to flowering and plant height showed negative correlation with number of spikelets per panicle, panicle length and days to maturity at both genetic and phenotypic level. From the study it was found that plant height, number of panicles per m2, number of spikelets per panicle and 1000 grains weight were the best character for yield improvement in scented rice.
