Abstract

Phenomenon of monodon slow growth disease which is commonly recognized as monodon slow growth syndrome have been reported to cause signifi cant losses of shrimp productions in many countries including Indonesia. The slow growth syndrome of P. monodon was due to infection of viruses; monodon baculovirus (MBV), infection hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV), and hepatopancreatic parvovirus (HPV). The purposes of this research was to analyze occurrence of viruses infection associated with slow growth syndrome, and to measure prevalence of virus infection of shrimp seed in South Sulawesi, particularly in Takalar Regency, using multiplex PCR detection technique (MPCR). Multiplex PCR is relatively new technique to simultaneously detect more than one virus agents in one reaction tube. In this study, 3 pairs of specifi c primer were applied to amplify IHHNV, MBV, and HPV. After performing several times optimization of annealing temperature, detection of these viruses with MPCR technique of shrimp seeds showed that the three viruses, as causative agents of slow growth syndrome, did exist in hatcheries observed. The PCR product of IHHNV was read at 302 bp, MBV at 261 bp and HPV at 595 bp. Prevalence of infection of IHHNV, MBV and HPV was 50%, 62% and 44%, respectively. The prevalence of these three viruses was considered high and could becoming the source of viruses transmission in shrimp ponds without proper selection of seed.
