Abstract

The present study was envisaged to measure genetic diversity among 121 genotypes of chickpea using Mahalanobis D2 stastics. Based on D2 values, 121 genotypes were grouped into 16 clusters of which cluster I was largest with 27 genotypes. Days to physiological maturity (45.46%) and seed yield per plant (42.79%) contributed maximum to the total divergence. Maximum intra cluster distance was observed for Cluster IV (49.12) which indicated that twenty one genotypes in cluster IV were most divergent. Maximum inter cluster distance was observed between Cluster VIII and X (89.46) followed by Cluster IX and X (89.4), suggesting maximum diversity between them. Three genotypes from cluster VIII (ICC 6816, ICC 12492, and ICC 13461) could be utilized as parents in further breeding programme with the desirable genotypes belonging to cluster X.
