Abstract
On the basis of multivariate analysis using Mahalanobis's D2 statistic, the 30 varieties were grouped in 8 clusters in both 1973–74 and 1974–75. The divergence between clusters did not follow their geographical distribution and was fairly at random. It has also been observed that no close correspondence is evident between geographical distribution to genetic divergence as estimated by D2 statistic. Days to flower, number of fruits per plant and fruit bearing branches were found to be important contributors to genetic divergence, hence, considerable weight should be given on these characters to increase yield.
