Abstract
Genetic variability, heritability along with genetic advance of traits, their association and direct and indirect effects on yield are essential for crop improvement. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate thirteen diverse mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilkeezek] genotypes for the estimation of genetic variability, heritability, and genetic advance, correlation coefficient for nine quantitative traits and their association level with yield. The genotypes differed significantly for all characters under study. Higher genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation was observed for seed yield, number of pods per plant and clusters per plant. Association analysis indicated that, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant, 100 seed weight and number of seeds per pod had positive correlation with seed yield. Maximum direct effect on seed yield was observed through number of pods per plant, number of pods per cluster, number of clusters per plant and 100 seed weight. The present findings could be suggested that on the basis of genetic parameter correlation and path analysis, number of pods per cluster, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and 100 seed weight should be given topmost priority while formulating a selection strategy for improvement of yield in greengram.
