Efficacy of chlorantraniliprole (Coragen 20SC) against brinjal shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis (Guen.)

Abstract

Brinjal is attacked by more than 70 insect pests ((Subbaratnam and Butani, 1982), of which brinjal shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis (Guen.) is the most destructive one. The young larvae bore into the veins, midribs, petioles of younger leaves and tender shoots resulting in typical drooping symptom. The larvae also attack the fruits making their entry under young calyx, leaving no visible signs of infestation. The larger holes seen on fruits are usually the exit holes of the larvae. Several insecticides have been tested to manage this notorious pest. Several new generation insecticides were evaluated against this pest and found to be effective. Sivakumar et al. (2003) reported that profenofos 50EC was most effective by recording lower shoot and fruit borer infestation as well as higher yield. Srinivas and Peter (1993), Chatterjee and Roy (2004) and Sarangdevot et al. (2006) ported considerable control of shoot and fruit borer with polytrin (0.44%), profenofos (0.05%) and novaluron (37.5 g ai/ha). However in order to overcome the resistance, residue and resurgence problems, new chemicals with different mode of action are required to be used. Chlorantraniliprole (Coragen 20SC) is one such new chemical and belongs to anthranilamide group. When anthranilamides bind to ryanodine receptors of insect muscles, the muscles contract leading to paralysis and death. This paper reports the efficacy of different concentrations of chlorantraniliprole against brinjal shoot and fruit borer.
