Abstract
It is demonstrated that the smearing out of an inhomogeneity in a plasma, called ambipolar diffusion, is of a complex nature in a magnetic field and cannot be described by the usual diffusion equation. The velocity of the inhomogeneity across the magnetic field significantly depends on the initial size of the inhomogeneity. It may exceed the transverse electron diffusion velocity by several times.
