Abstract
Complementing the broad suite of theories in tourism marketing, this chapter examines three theoretical approaches to understanding destination image research: the three-dimensional continuum suggested by Echtner and Ritchie; the three-component approach (the cognitive-affective-conative model) proposed by Gartner; and the image formation process stemming from the work of Gunn. Additionally, the chapter presents a definition of destination image, discusses the use of various measurements, and offers suggestions for future research.
