Abstract
A total of 110 male white rats 80 to 100 grams in weight was subjected to a subperiosteal resection of the diaphysis of left back limb. The periostium and epiphysis were left behind. A single x-ray dose of 2000 r was delivered to the limb. The animals were separated into seven experimental groups: 1) irradiation and operation on the third day, 2) operation and irradiation on the third day, 3) irradiation and operation on the 8th day, 4) operation and irradiation on the 8th day, 5) irradiation and operation on the 14th day, 6) operation and irradiation on the 14th day, and 7) operation but no irradiation (the control group for the other groups). The growth of the tibia was measured by taking x rays of the limb. No bone growth was observed in groups 1, 3, and 5. The control group showed rapid bone growth. The bone growth of groups 2, 4, and 6 was somewhat slowed down, but proceeded satisfactorily. Osteogenesis is suppressed, if the irradiation is carried out before the operation. If the operation is performed first, however, the regeneration process gives protection against the effects of radiation. The results of cytological and histochemical tests are described.more » (TTT)« less
