Abstract
I wish to thank my supervisor Dr.P. M. Walji for her invaluable guidance and \nclose supervision, without which this study could not have been a success as well as Dr. \nO.N. Gakuru who spared his valuable time to go through this work in the absence of \nDr. Walji. I am indeed indebted to Chris Luthi (Warugendo) for his enlightening suggestions \nand challenging comments. I wish to single out for appreciation the financial \nassistance that was accorded to me by UNICEF, through the Sociology Department, \nwhich enabled me to comfortably complete what would otherwise have turned out to be \na financially straining research. \nI am greatful to Thuita (TT), Kago, Wachira, who tirelessly helped to collect the \nraw data for this survey. Thanks to all the Muhindi's and those friends like Njagu, \nNkubitu Gathigi, Rose Njeri, Kabare and others who always understood my predicaments, \nfor the courage that they gave me which made me see the light at the end of what \nseemed to be an endless tunnel. Special thanks to Maggie Mwaila for sparing her time \nto edit this research thesis. \n-
