81. Wind Energy Potential in Southwest Division of Bangladesh

Abstract

Assessment of wind resource available at any prospective site is essential for optimizing the design of wind turbines, so as to minimize power-generating costs. This paper presents an assessment of wind energy potential of four selected meteorological stations, in the southwest of Bangladesh. Estimation of wind power potential is based on data of the wind speeds at these sites, are collected from official meteorological data. From the available data long term averages on monthly and annual averages are obtained, from which probability distribution of wind speed, velocity duration curves are plotted. Using the probability distribution of wind speed, the Weibull scale and shape parameters are calculated. Yearly frequency distributions of wind directions for the stations are also plotted. The results indicate that Jessore has higher wind potential than the others.
