Abstract

This paper presents the first results of the work for a Ph.D.-thesis. The effects of journey time and cost upon travel and travel behaviour are examined. Both travel time and travel costs are important issues. Constraints on both these will limit mobility growth. This finding is important to long term transportation planning. The work described partly consists of a study of literature and partly of an empirical research regarding journey times. The results show that these travel times have increased over the last 20 years. The number of trips made per person have also increased. The first empirical results apply to travel time for the Netherlands in 1990. These travel times are dependent upon both characteristics of people and upon the trip motive.
