Abstract
Knowledge management is a discipline that promotes an integrated approach to the \ncreation, capture, organization, access, and use of an enterprise's information assets and \nmost importantly, the tacit knowledge and expertise resident in the heads of individual \nemployees. It embodies the strategies and processes that an organization employs to \nidentify, capture and leverage the knowledge contained within its “corporate \nmemory.”The purpose of this study was to determine the challenges of knowledge \nmanagement at Kenya Revenue Authority and methods KRA applied to deal with the \nidentified challenges. The research focused on six factors that influence knowledge \nmanagement namely, strategic alignment, people and culture, leadership, processes \ncontent and technology. Data was collected through face to face interview with KRA \nstaff, some of whom were members of the knowledge management project team. The \nfindings indicated that the greatest challenge was with the strategic alignment of the \ninitiative, followed by lack of requisite skills. The KRA had appointed a project team to \nguide the process that was to mitigate the challenges. The study concluded that for KRA \nto get the most from KM they needed to integrate the initiative to their overall strategic \nmanagement processes. They also needed to manage knowledge content and context in \norder to preserve its value. \nTo further advance understanding of KM and how knowledge should be managed, the \nresearch recommends strategies KRA can employ to encourage knowledge sharing \nminimise the risks of knowledge loss.
