Orewa Beach is a popular recreational beach backed by a growing community, 30 km north of Auckland. In recent decades a number of activities and processes have caused general erosion of the beach front and affected the tidal estuary. The erosion combined with the sometimes inappropriate measures to protect the beachfront resulted in virtual removal of the dry beach width along the centre of the beach exposing substantial lengths of reflective rock revetment. Tonkin and Taylor were commissioned to study the coastal processes, implement a beach renourishment programme and prepare a long term management plan. The ongoing studies incorporate a coordinated beach observation programme, continuing monitoring of survey sections and re-analysis of existing data to predict the beach and estuary development at Orewa. Issues being addressed include the maintenance, modification or removal of existing structures.
