Evaluation of kharif onion (Allium cepa L.) varieties for yield and quality parameters

Abstract

Twenty four genotypes of onion were evaluated for their growth and nutrient content during Kharif season. The growth characters showed significant differences amongst the genotypes. The genotype AoSDKH-0911 exhibited highest bulb yield (311.03 q/ha), number of fleshy leaves (9.77), dry matter content (14.9%), TSS (14.03°Brix) and copper (101.53ppm). Maximum volume of bulb (99.73 cc) was recorded in the genotype AoSDKH-0920. The maximum nitrogen (0.91%) and zinc content (14.77ppm) was found in AoSDKH-0921, while maximum phosphorous (0.36%) and potash (0.72%) were observed in AoSDKH-0903 and AoSDKH-0913, respectively. The maximum pungency (14.40μmol/g) in AoSDKH-0912 and highest sulphar content (0.48%) in AoSDKH-0909 was recorded. On the basis of yield and quality parameters AoSDKH-0911 was found to be the best for cultivation in Kharif season.
