Abstract

buildings consist of masonry wholly or in part. These buildings are therefore at risk relative to the next significant earthquake. They should therefore be analyzed to ascertain their structural integrity in resisting probable seismic motions. On the basis of such analyses it would be possible to rate buildings and decide on possible remedial measures .When large numbers of buildings are involved the task of evaluating structural integrity can be costly and time consuming.Reliable simplified analysis methods could go a long way in reducing time and cost.Such methods appear to be in short supply .Some have been produced. For example, Lefter and Colville (20) developed a simplified, gross response method for evaluating the earthquake safety of existing buildings constructed of reinforced concrete frames with masonry infill panels.Consideration for reinforcing such buildings is given .It is felt that detailed analysis procedures of the type developed by Page and Summers, together with experimental data, could be used to verify and develop simplified, gross response models for general and special applications .
