Abstract
A comprehensive analytical solution for the problem of calculating the flow over a rectangular weir with a sharp crest is attempted. The solution is based on the application of the flow pattern, due to the combination of a uniform flow with a vortex pair, to the flow over the weir. The fluid is assumed ideal; and contractions arc not considered. The proposed discharge equation is compared with some of the most widely used equations.
