Effect of Herbicides on Weeds and Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill]

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted during 1995 and 1996 in kharif seasons at Research Farm, College of Agriculture, Gwalior (M. P.) on inceptisol with 14 treatments replicated thrice in randomized block design. The results of two years findings revealed that the application of alachlor at 1.5 kg and pendimethalin 1.5 kg ha−1 as pre-emergence and two hand weedings (20 and 35 DAS) in soybean crop drastically reduced weed density, weed biomass and increased the yield of crop. Obviously, if weed free treatment was not considered for evaluation with other treatments, then two hand weedings were next in order, which gave higher seed yield (1303 and 1157 kg ha−1 during 1995 and 1996, respectively) closely followed by alachlor at 1.5 kg ha-1 as pre-emergence in both the years. However, alachlor at 1.5 kg ha−1 was on a par with pendimethalin 1.5 kg ha−1 as pre-emergence and fluchloralin 1.5 kg ha−1 as pre-plant application.
