Safeguarding intangible cultural heritage : towards drafting a policy for the sustainable management and conservation of living heritage : towards national policy for intangible heritage

Abstract

This paper takes its lead from ongoing research associated with the process of formulating policy and the development of instruments towards safeguarding our living heritage. Currently there are no existing legal instruments or formal policy for the conservation and sustainable management of living heritage or intangible cultural heritage in South Africa. But some aspects of intangible heritage such as oral histories and live performances are being recorded ad hoc by some museum specialists and university researchers, and some archives include sound and video tapes (ACTAG:1995). In the absence of a national policy and management guidelines for the conservation and sustainable management of living heritage, SAHRA has embarked on a process of formulating minimum standards and guidelines for the protection of living heritage associated with tangible heritage resources.
