Abstract
Lemongrass Cymbopogon flexuosus (Steud.) Wats, is one of the most widely grown essential oil plants in the world. The present study focused on the influence of different doses of sulphur on the essential oil yield of lemongrass var. Krishna In this experiment, five different doses of sulphur (0–4.0 tons/ha) was applied and during the course of investigation the essential oil from the herbs was collected at three different stages (i.e. at 60, 120, 180 days after planting) and it was noticed that the essential oil content did not follow any particular pattern. Similarly, the chemical constituents of the oil were not influenced by the treatments. Though the differences noticed in oil content were significant due to treatments at all the three stages a specific pattern of change was not observed. The chemical constituents of the essential oil were also estimated at three different stages. It was observed that the citral content was increased due to sulphur application compared to control. Citral-1, Citral-2, Geraniol and Geranyl acetate were present in the essential oil.
