Abstract

Telecommunications around the world is changing direction. The job of providing modern nations with a basic telephone in every household is almost complete. The future of telecommunications will be based around information services and multifeatured voice/data/text/image terminals. This will be a market driven change in an environment very different from that of today, although opportunities will only be realised in the framework of telecommunication network standards. New telecommunications technology, network architectures and customer premises equipment standards will play an important role. Telecom Australia is taking major steps to keep Australian industry abreast of network modernisation plans. This will allow an Australian industry attuned to market needs to take initiatives to develop network and customer equipment and new information services for the world market.
