Abstract
The study investigated the acoustic properties of the offset of the Cantonese diphthongs /ai / and /an / by spectrographic techniques. Four male native speakers of Cantonese recorded a word list that contained the diphthongs (/ai/, /au/), glides (/j/, /w/) and vowels (/i/? /u/). The acoustic analysis included measures of the first three formant frequencies (Fl, F2, F3), the rate of change and the duration of formant transition, and the differences between fomiant amplitudes of the first three formants. These measures were estimated in the beginning, the middle and the end point of the glide, vowel and diphthongs, respectively. Results showed that temporal relations of the fomiant transition, the formant frequencies and intensity patterns of the offset of diphthongs and glides were significantly different.
