Abstract

Tunas are highly valued food fishes, targeted by \nneritic water fisheries and distant water fishing \nnations. Global tuna production has been estimated \nto be around 4.3 million tonnes (t) in 2005. The \ncontribution by the Indian Ocean tuna fisheries was \n22% of the total tuna production of 1.2 million t. \nThe rapid expansion of the tuna fisheries in the \nworld oceans, especially the long line fisheries (both \nordinary and deep long lining), purse seine fisheries \n(both log-associated and free school) drift gillnetting \n(oceanic and neritic), longlining employing \nconverted trawlers, pole and line fishery and sport \nfishery (angling) urgently necessitated a \ncompendium on the present status of tuna fisheries in the global scenario. It is in this context that the \nbook “Tuna-Fishery, Biology and Management” has \nbeen prepared by N.G.K. Pillai and P. Satheesh \nKumar (222 pp) and published by CMFRI (2014).
