Abstract

One of the most important features of wood structure is that it is variable. Wood is a composite of various components (at spatial scales of microns to metres) that themselves are highly ordered. The relative abundance of these components, however, varies with environment and genetics. After discussing the importance of wood from several viewpoints, we overview the general characteristics of wood at its various scales, emphasizing features of importance to biotic degradation.
