Abstract
To investigate the interrelationship between methionine and choline in the broiler chicks, an experiment with 3 × 3 factorial design, 3 levels of methionine supplementation (0.00, 0.15, 0.30%) and 3 levels of choline supplementation (0,00, 0.05, 0.10%), was carried out. A total of 360 birds with 9 treatment composed of possible combination of 2 factors and 3 levels of them, were allotted with quadruplicate groups of 10 birds. Experimental diets (CP : 21%; ME : 3000 ㎉) were based on corn and soybean meal and considered to be adequate in all known required nutrients (NRC, 1977) excluding sulfur containing amino acids. Growth response from supplemental choline was not as great as that obtained by the addition of methionine but in the absence of sufficient methionine, choline was partially effective as a methyl donor. It is concluded that present experimental diet composed of corn and soybean meal was deficient in metabolically labile methyl groups and the response to choline in correcting deficiencies of labile methyl groups in cornsoybean diet was about 0.78 times that of methionine. Liver weight was not influenced by supplementation of methionine and choline. Liver fat content was influenced by supplemental methionine and choline. But there was not consistant relationship between supplemental methionine and liver fat or between supplemental choline and liver fat.
