Abstract
Four soil groups, namely hilly (Ustochrepts), yellowish brown (Haplustalfs), medium black (Chromusterts) and red loam (Haplustalfs) soils occuring in sub-humid to humid agroclimatic regions of Rajasthan were studied for the characterization of the clay minerals. Illite and montmorillonitic type of minerals were observed to constitute the major bulk of total clay of the soils of this region. Illite predominated the clay from hilly soils, whereas yellowish brown, medium black and red loam soils were found to be dominantly montmorillonitic.
