Abstract
The construction industry, through cooperation between engineers and contractors, has made many material contributions toward the welfare of the United States. Construction activity is traced from the earliest days of history to the present. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the industry in the development of the United States. The paper gives statistics that show the size and importance of construction today.
