Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during 1996-97 to 1998-99 at the Ghaghraghat farm, to find out the most remunerative, high energy output and water-use efficient cropping sequence for semi-deep water and flood- prone situation. Significantly higher values of rice-equivalent yield (RE), water use, net income, benefit : cost ratio and production efficiency (PE) were obtained with rice (Oryza sativa L.)-wheat (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Fiori & Paol.)-maize (Zea mays L.) + fodder cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] sequence under semi-deep water, and rice-lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus)-maize+ cowpea (F) sequence in flood-prone situation. Water-use effi- ciency (WUE) was invariably highest in rice-lentil-maize + cowpea (F) in both the situations. Rice-wheat-maize + cowpea (F) sequence utilized the highest total energy input in both situations. Total energy output and energy- use efficiency were highest with rice-mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czenj. & Cossonl-maize + cowpea (F) se- quence in both situations.
