La quatrième exposition impressionniste en caricature: de nouvelles identifications d'oeuvres

Caricatures of the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition: new works identified. A caricature entitled Coup d'Oeil sur les Independants (A Glimpse at the Independents) leads to the identification of several paintings present at the fourth Impressionist exhibition in 1879. This satirical illustration allows us to see certain paintings that, up to now, had never been considered as having been present at the exhibition. For the first time, we can identify four fans by Degas, two paintings by Jean-Louis Forain, a drawing by Albert Lebourg and a painting by Caillebotte. The painting by Caillebotte in the center, Le vedu et la Chevre (The Calf and the Goat) was probably destroyed by the artist, himself, and it has never been photographed or reproduced. The caricature thus serves as visual evidence of the original work.
