Abstract
Specific problems in the management of coarse textured soils of north-west India include their excessive permeability and their low water and nutrient holding capacities. A study was conducted in loamy sand soils of Rajasthan to examine the effect of soil compaction on various soil physical properties. The experiment was consisting of four levels of compaction i.e. 0 (farmers practice), 4, 8 and 12 passing of 500 kg iron roller on wheat crop. The results revealed that twelve passing of 500 kg iron roller increased the bulk density by 8.11%, moisture content by 60.92% and capillary porosity by 28.68% whereas, saturated hydraulic conductivity decreased by 44.60% and total porosity by 11.15% in 15–30 cm layer at just after compaction
