Abstract
The uptake of Ca/sup 45/ by the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis is described. Most of the incorporated radioactivity was found inside the outer border of the shell; very little exchange or adsorption of Ca/sup 45/ could be demonstrated with empty shells incubated with the ion. Maximum Ca/sup 45/ uptake was noted at 17 hr; after that time the snails lost radioactivity. Similar results were obtained with other freshwater gastropods (Planorbis corneus and Lymnaea palustris). Experiments with Sr showed that it is taken up by gastropods in a manner analogous to that of Ca. (BBB)
