Abstract

Fusion of the first three cervical vertebrae is indicated in the treatment of unstable lesions in this region particularly if damage to the spinal cord is a possibility. Inclusions of the occiput has been recommended by some authors, yet it appears that if a secure fusion of the first three vertebrae can be obtained with the occiput left free, instability can be corrected and more head motion can be preserved.
