Perceptions of the nuclear industry

Abstract

Five issues confronting the nuclear industry in the USA are discussed. These issues are: the need to improve the performance/availability of nuclear power plants; there is essentially no growth in the nuclear power industry today; the slowdown of the fast breeder research and development and the associated reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels; fusion technology reviews primarily a physics research and development program and is many decades away from achieving commercial electric power; and the treatment, handling, shipping, and ultimate disposal of low-level radioactive waste is a major issue for the nuclear industry.
