Abstract

CD4 : CD8 ratios were compared in FIV positive and negative lions Panthera leo, and FIV positive and negative domestic cats Felis catus. The results showed that FIV positive domestic cats had ratios significantly less than those of FIV negative cats. However, the ratios for FIV positive lions were also less than those of FIV negative lions, an unexpected finding as FIV positive lions remain unaffected clinically. It is felt that this could be due to the fact that the FIV positive lions were much younger than the FIV negative lion group. This is under further investigation.
