There has been little research on potential impacts of a local election on the voting rate in the federal election. In this paper, I tried to analyze the possible linkage of a voting rate between the local election to the federal election. Using 2004 California data, I found that the voting rate of the federal election in the districts in which a state Senate election was held was higher than other districts. Controlling for the partisan identification effects, the state election was a statistically significant factor in the voting rate of the federal election. It implies that the electorates who were interested in the local election are more likely to vote for the federal election than those who resided in the districts of no local election.
