Abstract
The total kinetic energy of fission fragments resulting from the fission of U/sup 233/ and Th/sup 232/ by 14.5-Mev neutrons and of U/sup 233/ by thermal neutrons was measured for fragment ratios of 1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.43, using a previously described method (Zh. Eksperim. i Teor. Fiz., 42: 1475(1962)); the targets used were 10 and 50 mg/cm/sup 2/ thick, respectively. The data obtained indicated the yields of the symmetric fragments and their kinetic energies are related to the changes of the energy of the bombarding particles. It was concluded that the symmetric fission has an adiabatic character; shell effects play a more important role in it than in asymmetric fission. The symmetric process involves less deformation of the nucleus, with resulting increase in the probability of its occurrence and an increased kinetic energy of the fragments. (TTT)
