Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare a reliability for obesity between body mass index (BMI) and percent body fat, and to compare a difference of body fat distribution between waist-hip ratio (WHR) and waist circumference (WC) for the discrimination of central obesity and peripheral obesity in adult women. The study included 213 women subjects (aged 37.9±8.3 yrs) who are living in Daegu and Gumi city. Percent body fat, BMI, WHR and WC were demonstrated the useful predictors for the skinfold thickness, body circumferences and obesity in this study. However, the differences of skinfold thickness and body circumference were higher in the comparison between obese and non-obese based upon percent body fat than the comparison between obese and non-obese based upon BMI. Percent body fat showed a higher correlation coefficient with skinfold thickness and body circumference than BMI. Therefore, the reliability for obesity measurement has higher in percent body fat than BMI. In the comparison between WHR and WC for useful measurement of body fat distribution, both WHR and WC were accepted for appropriate indicator of body fat distribution.
