Abstract
The paper describes the hydraulic development of the seawall for Sydney Airport's Parallel Runway. Criteria included minimisation of wave overtopping and wave spray carryover, security against wave scour at the wall foundation and control of differential water levels behind the wall panels. The solutions developed included an integral, curved wave deflector cast into the top panels of the seawall, a secondary wave barrier set 7m in from the seawall, an overtopping pavement between the seawall and the secondary barrier, various natural and proprietary forms of scour protection at the base of the wall, and a no-fines concrete drainage block behind the vertical joints in the seawall.
