Genesis, Characteristics and Taxonomic Classification of Some Red Soils in Bundelkhand Region of Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

Morphology and other characteristics of six typical pedons formed on sandstone, shale, granite and colluvium representing different landforms of Banda district of Uttar Pradesh were studied. The soils are deep to very deep, excessively to well drained, reddish brown to red, mildly acidic, low to medium in CEC, medium to high in organic carbon with wide textural variations depending upon parent material and physiograplly. The soils show high molar ratios and variations of SiO2/R2O3 are due to parent material. The depthwise distribution of SiO2 indicates the stabilization of silica content under mildly acidic pedochemical environment. Flat topped hill and monadnock exhibit the development of Bt horizon while soils of other landforms show Bw horizon. The soils are classified under the orders of Inceptisols and Alfisols.
