Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland updates its scope of nursing and midwifery practice framework

Introduction \nScope of Practice: the range of roles, functions, responsibilities and \nactivities which a registered nurse or registered midwife is educated, \ncompetent and has authority to perform. \nIn 2000, the Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice \nFramework was developed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board \nof Ireland (NMBI) (formerly An Bord Altranais) to support nurses \nand midwives in developing their individual professional roles. \nSince then, the Scope Framework, with its decision-making \nalgorithm, has been a keystone of guidance for the professions. \nRecognising that signifi cant changes and developments have \ntaken place within the context of the Irish health care service, \neducation and professional practice and regulation, the NMBI \ncommenced a project to review and revise the 2000 Scope \ndocument. The NMBI wanted to ensure its guidance continued to \nsupport nurses and midwives practising in an increasing complex \nand challenging health care environment.
