Genetic variability and correlation analysis for yield and yield contributing traits in advanced mutant lines of blackgram

Abstract

Nature of variation and association of seven yield component traits with yield and among themselves were studied using 33 genotypes of blackgram. Considerable variations among the genotypes were observed for all the characters under study. Heritability estimates were high for all the characters except seeds per pods. High heritability with high genetic advance for plant height, primary branches per plant, pods per plant, 100seed weight and yield per plant indicated additive gene action. Selection in these traits would be effective for improvement of blackgram while days to flowering and days to maturity showed high heritability with low genetic advance indicating nonadditive gene action. Correlation analysis indicated highly significant positive correlation between pod yield and number of pods/plant, primary branches per plant, seeds per pod, plant height and 100-seed weight. Days to flowering and maturity showed negative but significant correlation with yield. Plant height, primary branches per plant, pods per plant and 100seed weight showed high positive correlation among themselves with 100-seed weight. Seeds per pod had a low correlation at phenotypic level but significant and positive at genotypic level with 100-seed weight.
