New media, new opportunities: empowering women through social media

Abstract

Media has continuously been the simplest means of communication in disseminating information among the masses concerning most of the problems. In the contemporary world Social Media is proved to be an effective medium for making awareness concerning women‘s problems as many of them gets information through such kinds of media. Within the free time women seems to be using Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, Second Life, Twitter, etc. They search information, share it and disseminate it to most the people who use the same kind of networks. The social media is somewhat totally different compared with industrial or traditional media, like newspapers, television, and film. Social media are thought to be cheap and accessible to anyone who wants to publish or access information, compared to industrial media that typically need vital resources to publish. However, these media aren't totally different from the industrial media. Each variety of media is capable of reaching tiny or massive audiences. On the one hand industrial media production needs specialized skills and expertise. Contrary to this, most the social media production doesn't need specialized skills and expertise, or needs solely modest reinterpretation of existing skills. It is observed that some of the problems are typically missed by the mainstream industrial media, people could able to know about such problems solely through the social media. They not solely share the data concerning the happening of the women‘s problems at the same time additionally they offer their instant feedbacks and opinions that require immediate actions. Contrary to the traditional media, social media is gender sensitive and do not contain gender bias. This paper makes an attempt to assess the role of social media towards gender empowerment.
