Abstract

Uterine microbial isolation from 16 pyometritis cases yielded a heterogeneous group of 9 species of organisms with E. coli being the predominant. Frequently, 2 or 3 bacterial species were isolated from most of the animals. In in-vitro drug sensitivity test, Enrofloxacin seemed to be most effective in inhibiting growth. Both the uterine horns became markedly distended, saccular and filled with blood-mixed exudates. The uterine wall was thickened, haemorrhagic, ulcerated and corrugated. The cystic ovaries were consistently observed in most of the cases. Vacuolar degeneration with pseudo-stratification of surface mucosa, endometrial cystic glandular hyperplasia, cellular exudation in glandular spaces and interstices were the salient histological features in uterus.
