Abstract
Central sleep apnea (CSA), which refers to a periodic breathing pattern occurring during sleep has been increasingly recognized as a potentially important pathophysiological characteristic, and perhaps mechanism, in the pathogenesis of heart failure. CSA may also occur in premature infants and healthy individuals, particularly those at high altitudes, and may also manifest in response to certain medications as well as after structural damage to the central nervous system.
