Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to look at some of the more subtle issues confronting potential opportunities and risks for commuter rail applications in smaller cities, like Calgary, not normally considered commuter rail candidates. The paper will also highlight the hybrid of diesel light rail transit and commuter rail operations which showed special potential in Calgary. The discussion in this paper derives directly from a 5 month commuter rail demonstration project which was conducted in Calgary during the spring and summer of 1996. The demonstration was operated on Canadian Pacific Railway tracks with a new generation of diesel light rail vehicle, the Siemens RegioSpringer.
