MODELING INTERSECTION CONTROL DELAY IN CORSIM

Abstract

The principal parameter used to describe the performance of intersections has been delay. Average stopped delay per vehicle passing through an intersection or intersection approach was mostly used in the past to determine the level of service (LOS). This was mainly die to the fact that stopped delay is easy to measure in the field. The conversion between stopped delay and approach delay was also used by applying a multiplier. The more recent study however suggested that there is no constant relationship between stopped delay and approach delay. In addition, the old procedures as those of 1994 Highway Capacity manual (HCM) were found to be no longer adequate in accurately assessing the traffic operation under various traffic conditions at signalized intersections, especially under saturated or over-saturated conditions. As a result, the new (1997 version) Highway Capacity manual proposes to use intersection control delay (ICD) to determine LOS and evaluate intersection operation.
