This paper provides background about the National Register of Historic Places, both in terms of philosophy and in terms for practice. The author notes the importance of transportation-related properties to our national and local history, stresses the context-driven nature of historical significance, and provides suggestions for incorporating historic property identification and evaluation effectively into federal planning.
