Abstract
Anomalies in design flood estimates can arise from the design temporal patterns and losses. This study shows the effect that intense bursts within longer duration design storms can have on flood estimates, and recommends filtering of the temporal patterns. It also presents the results of a pilot study in which losses are derived to be consistent with the nature of design rainfalls; the result was a significant improvement in design flood accuracy.
